3-Decimal Jumble
decimals · comparing and ordering decimals to thousandths
To compare decimals up to thousandths and put them in order [5.NBT.A.3b].
3-Decimal Jumble is a Grade 5 place value game for comparing and ordering decimals to the thousandths place. Students use cards to build two decimals, place them in ascending order, and then see whether another decimal falls between them. That “between” decision makes them compare digits by place rather than relying on the length or appearance of the number.
Use it with partners or a small group when decimal comparison needs more depth than simply choosing < or >. Ask students to explain which place value decided the comparison and how they know a number belongs inside or outside an interval.
