Are We Related? is a Grade 1 operations game for connecting addition and subtraction facts. Students draw two cards, write an addition sentence, and then create a related subtraction sentence from the same numbers. Reusing the same fact family helps students see subtraction as connected to addition instead of learning the two operations as separate sets of facts.
Use it with partners or a small group when students are beginning to explain inverse relationships and fact families.
