arithmetic trading

expressions · sorting and trading equivalent arithmetic expression cards

Computation Algorithms

arithmetic trading is a Grade 3 card game built around sorting equivalent arithmetic expressions. Students group cards by the value of the expression, then trade cards with classmates as they work toward a complete matching set. The trading format gives repeated computation practice, but it also asks students to notice that different-looking expressions can belong to the same numerical family.

This works well for a small group when students need fluency practice without a page of disconnected problems. As they sort and trade, you can listen for how they evaluate expressions and how confidently they recognize equivalent values.
