Boxes

Boxes is a Grade 5 measurement game for finding the volume of right rectangular prisms. Players roll a die and place the value into a length, width, or height position, then calculate the product once all three dimensions are filled. Students can also build the prism with cubes to verify the volume, linking the formula to the structure of a three-dimensional box.

Use it in a small group when students are moving from counting unit cubes toward generalizing volume as length × width × height.
