Division Algorithm

Build a Division Problem is a Grade 4 division game in which students construct a valid division equation one digit at a time. Players work from a division form and place available digits into the open positions, following restrictions such as keeping required values nonzero. The challenge is not only to divide correctly at the end, but to make placement decisions that can lead to a complete, valid problem.

Use it in a small group when students are ready to think about the structure of the division algorithm and the role of each digit. The completed problems give students a reason to check one another’s work and discuss whether the equation is mathematically valid.
