Addition Algorithm

Build an Addition Problem is a Grade 4 digit-card game that turns the addition algorithm into a placement puzzle. Players take the available top digit and choose where to place it in an addition form, gradually building a complete multi-digit problem. Since the digit cannot simply be saved for later, each turn asks students to make a place-value decision that affects the final equation.

Use it in a small group when students already know multi-digit addition and need practice thinking about the structure of the written algorithm. Have players check the completed problems and discuss which placements created larger or smaller sums.
