Division Algorithm
Build-the-Greatest-Quotient is a Grade 4 division game that combines place value with strategic digit placement. Players build a division problem from drawn digits and then calculate the quotient when the form is complete. Since a zero divisor is not allowed and the goal is the greatest quotient, students must think carefully about how the dividend and divisor work together.
Use it in a small group when students are ready to move beyond routine division exercises and reason about the size of quotients. Ask students which placements made the quotient larger and how they could estimate the result before calculating.
