To complete a table for a two-variable relationship [5.OA.B.3].
BY THE CARDS is a Grade 5 patterns game for working with two-variable relationships and tables. On each turn, a student draws a game card and a number card, substitutes that value for the unknown, and completes the second column of the table. Scoring by correct rows encourages students to attend to the relationship throughout the table instead of solving only one isolated input.
This is useful for partner or small-group practice with input-output thinking and numerical relationships. As students complete and check tables, listen for how they describe the rule connecting the two quantities.
