Flip

ratios · converting fractions to percentages

Demonstrate and explain the meaning of percentage concretely, pictorially and symbolically [6.N(NC).11].

Flip is a percentage game for Grades 6–8 that connects a fraction to a concrete model out of 100 counters. Players begin with a fraction, arrange 100 chips according to its denominator, and turn over chips as play continues until the fraction has been represented as a percentage. The physical model makes the denominator, equivalent fraction out of 100, and percent relationship visible.

Use it with partners when students are developing meaning for percent rather than only applying a conversion rule. Ask students to explain how the rows of counters show the same quantity as both a fraction and a percent. Generate lesson support for Flip with a free Find a Math Game account.
