Fly High, Fly Low

place value · comparing 4-digit numbers

To understand the place values and compare numbers [4.NBT.A.2].

Fly High, Fly Low is a Grade 4 place value game for building and comparing four-digit numbers. Players receive four cards, arrange them into a number, and then use a die roll to learn whether the round rewards the greatest or least value. Because students choose the digit order before comparing, every round requires attention to thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones.

Use it with partners or a small group for place value review that includes both number construction and comparison. Ask students how they arranged their digits and what they would change if the goal switched from high to low. Generate the lesson with a free Find a Math Game account.
