Fraction Relay

fractions · representing and describing proper fractions with base ten blocks

Represent and describe proper fractions [5.N(NC).7].

Fraction Relay is a team game for Grades 6–8 that represents proper fractions with base-ten blocks. One player sees a fraction such as a value out of 1000, then returns to the team and can communicate only with “too high” or “too low” clues while teammates build the fraction. The restriction forces students to interpret the model carefully and refine it through magnitude reasoning.

Use it as an active whole-class or small-group challenge when you want fraction representation to involve communication and estimation. Rotating the clue-giver role keeps different students responsible for interpreting the target. Create a free Find a Math Game account to generate lesson support for Fraction Relay.
