Function or Not

functions · identifying functions from ordered pairs, tables, mappings, and graphs

To identify relations and functions

Function or Not is a Grade 8 functions game that asks students to identify functions in several representations. Depending on the card they draw, students may analyze ordered pairs, x-y tables, input-output mappings, or graphs and then explain whether the relation is a function. That variety matters because students have to recognize the same idea even when the representation changes.

The board-game format makes it useful for small-group review after students have learned the definition of a function and common ways to represent one. Listen for students explaining why each input has only one output or using graph-based reasoning when appropriate.
