Getting in Shape
geometry · building and describing three-dimensional geometric solids
Build, represent and describe geometric objects and shapes [5.SS(D).15].
Getting in Shape is a geometry game for Grades 6–8 that has students collect the pieces needed to build three-dimensional solids. Using a spinner, players work toward constructing a cube, then a triangular prism, and finally a square pyramid from the required faces and elastic bands. Students repeatedly connect each solid to the shapes and edges needed to assemble it.
The game works well in a small group when students are studying the structure of 3D figures and need something more tangible than identifying solids from pictures. As students build, ask them to describe the faces and compare how the three solids are constructed.
