Going Back Home

integers · adding and subtracting integers on a number line

To add and subtract integers and understand integers on number line [7.NS.A.1b].

Going Back Home is a Grade 7 integer game that uses a number line to model addition and subtraction. Players begin at zero, draw cards, and move according to the card’s color: black values are added and red values are subtracted. Because every move changes the current position, students repeatedly connect an integer operation to direction and location on the number line.

Use it for partner or small-group practice when students are learning why adding and subtracting signed numbers changes position in predictable ways. The goal of returning to zero also gives students a concrete reference point throughout the game. Create a free Find a Math Game account to generate lesson support for Going Back Home.
