Guess the Number

place value · Number properties on a hundreds chart

Guess the Number is a Grade 1 number-sense game played on a hundreds chart. The teacher chooses a secret number and students narrow the possibilities by asking yes-or-no questions about size, odd or even status, multiples, ending digits, tens, or ones. Each question eliminates possibilities, so students use place value and number properties as clues rather than guessing randomly.

Use it as a whole-class warm-up when you want reasoning and mathematical language to drive the activity. Challenge students to beat the previous number of questions and discuss which questions eliminated the most possibilities.
