Guiding the Point
coordinate plane · plotting and moving ordered pairs
To follow directions on a coordinate plane [5.G.A.2].
Guiding the Point is a Grade 5 coordinate-plane game that combines plotting ordered pairs with directional movement. Students create a starting point from red and black cards, then use a spinner and die to determine how that point moves on the coordinate grid. Each turn requires them to track x- and y-coordinates carefully before plotting the new location.
Use it for partner or small-group practice after students know how ordered pairs identify points. The movement adds a useful second layer because students must reason about how changing one coordinate affects position on the plane.
