HIT THE TARGET!

expressions · writing and evaluating numerical expressions

A fast, fun game that builds fluency with the four operations and teaches students how to write and evaluate numerical expressions.

HIT THE TARGET! is an expressions game for Grades 3–5 that challenges students to combine three card values to reach a target number. Players must use every card exactly once and may choose addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and parentheses to build a valid numerical expression. The target format turns computation into a search problem, so students experiment with operations instead of following a single prescribed method.

Use it for small-group fluency and expression practice when students are ready to compare multiple ways of reaching the same number. Ask students to read successful expressions aloud and explain how parentheses change the value. Create a free Find a Math Game account to generate teacher-ready lesson support for HIT THE TARGET!
