How Many Ways? is a Grade 1 place-value warm-up that asks students to compose the same number in multiple ways with tens and ones. A number such as 66 might be represented as 6 tens and 6 ones, 5 tens and 16 ones, or 4 tens and 26 ones. The open-ended prompt helps students see that place-value units can be regrouped without changing the total.
