Integer Hexagon
integers · mentally adding and subtracting integers
To add and subtract integers [7.NS.A.3].
Integer Hexagon is a Grade 7 mental-math game for adding and subtracting integers. A shared hexagon is divided into triangles containing integer expressions, and students evaluate the expressions to find triangles whose answers fall within the range assigned to their color. The range-based hunt makes students estimate the sign and size of an answer as well as calculate it.
Use it in a small group when students need mental integer practice without writing every calculation. Asking players to explain why an expression belongs in a particular color range can reinforce both operation rules and number magnitude.
