Minimizing the Remainder
division · division with remainders
To find quotients and remainders with up to 2-digit dividends and 1-digit divisors [4.NBT.B.6].
Minimizing the Remainder is a Grade 4 division card game where the smallest remainder wins the round. Students flip two cards to create a two-digit dividend, draw a third card for the one-digit divisor, and state the quotient and remainder. Since players compare remainders rather than quotients, each round highlights what is left over after equal groups are formed.
Use it for partner or small-group review when students are practicing division with two-digit dividends and one-digit divisors. Comparing several remainders in the same round helps reinforce that a valid remainder must be smaller than the divisor.
