Ordered Fractions

fractions · comparing and ordering fractions

Define, compare and order any rational numbers [8.(NC).3].

Ordered Fractions is a fraction-comparison dice game for Grades 6–8. Players roll ten times and place each value into numerator or denominator spaces on a board, trying to create five fractions that are already arranged from least to greatest. At the end, they cross out as few fractions as possible until the remaining sequence is in ascending order.

Use it for partner work when students are comparing fractions and reasoning about how numerator and denominator choices affect value. Since each die roll must be placed immediately, students need to estimate fraction size before the board is complete.
