Platonic Solids (Part I) is a Grade 6 hands-on geometry activity where students build three-dimensional solids from nets. Groups construct one of the five Platonic solids and examine the defining features: congruent regular polygon faces and the same number of faces meeting at each vertex. Building the models makes those properties easier to see than working from flat diagrams alone.
Use it in small groups when students are studying polyhedra, nets, and regular polygons. Comparing the five finished models creates a natural discussion about why only certain combinations of polygons can form Platonic solids.
