Polygon Battle

geometry · composing polygons and finding area

To solve areas of polygons [7.G.B.6].

Polygon Battle is a Grade 7 geometry challenge where students compose a required polygon from unit squares and triangles and then determine its area. Each game card specifies both the shape and target area, and players have one minute to assemble a valid figure and show the calculation. The puzzle pieces make area formulas concrete because students can also reason from the areas of the components.

Use it in a small group when students are studying area of composite polygons. Comparing two different constructions that meet the same requirements can lead to strong discussion about decomposition and equivalent area.
