Positive and Negative Cards

integers · Adding integers using red and black playing cards

Positive and Negative Cards is a Grade 7 partner activity for adding integers with a standard deck. Black cards represent positive values and red cards represent negative values; each round reveals two cards, and students determine whether the sum is positive, negative, or zero. The winning pair of cards goes to the student assigned to that sign, making the sign of the sum the central decision.

Use it for partner work when students are learning to combine integers with different signs. The color model provides a simple visual cue while still requiring students to compare absolute values when one card is positive and the other negative.
