Power Roller

exponents · Evaluating powers with bases and exponents

Define and use power, base and exponent to represent repeated multiplication [7.NC.1].

Power Roller is an exponent game for Grades 6–8 where dice values are placed into base and exponent positions on a game board. After all blanks are filled, students evaluate each power and add the results to find a final score. Since each roll must be placed immediately, students have to think strategically about whether a larger number is more valuable as a base or as an exponent.

Use it in a small group when students are learning the meaning of powers, bases, and exponents. Comparing final expressions can lead to useful discussion about why changing the base or exponent has such a large effect on value.
