Pythagorean Rules!

geometry · Pythagorean Theorem

Use the Pythagorean relationship to calculate the measure of the third side of a right triangle, given the other two sides in 2-D applications [8.SS(M).2].

Pythagorean Rules! is a Grade 8 partner game where dice generate the legs of a right triangle. Students draw the triangle on a grid, use the Pythagorean relationship to calculate the third side, and then check the result by measuring the drawn hypotenuse. The calculated side length also determines the score for the round.

Use it when students are applying the Pythagorean Theorem to two-dimensional right triangles. Comparing the calculated value with an actual measurement gives students a built-in reasonableness check.
