RACE TO 18

addition · adding three one-digit numbers and identifying odd or even sums

To add one-digit numbers with sums up to 20 using mental strategies, to identify numbers as even or odd

RACE TO 18 is a Grade 2 dice game that combines mental addition with odd-and-even reasoning. Players roll three times, add the values mentally, and then use the parity of the sum to determine movement: odd sums move forward and even sums move backward. The first player to land exactly on 18 wins.

Use it in a small group when students are practicing sums within 20 and identifying odd and even numbers. Predicting whether a sum will be odd or even before calculating exactly can strengthen number-property reasoning.
