Shades of Decimal

decimals · illustrating decimal numbers with models

To illustrate decimal numbers.

Shades of Decimal is a Grade 5 partner game for interpreting decimal models on tenths and hundredths grids. One player shades one or more 1-by-10 or 10-by-10 boards, and the opponent identifies the decimal represented by the combined shading. The visual setup helps students connect decimal notation with quantities larger than a single grid when multiple models are used.

Use it for partner practice when students are learning to read decimal area models flexibly. Ask students to explain how the shaded tenths or hundredths combine before naming the final decimal. Create a free Find a Math Game account to generate teacher-ready lesson support for Shades of Decimal. No credit card is required, with 3 lifetime lesson generations.
