SINK OR SWIM

coordinate plane · graphing ordered pairs on a coordinate plane

To graph points on a coordinate plane

SINK OR SWIM is a Grade 5 coordinate-plane game with a Battleship-style setup. Each player secretly marks ten ordered pairs on a shared grid, then card draws generate two possible coordinates to call. A hit produces a “sink,” while an empty location produces a “swim,” so students repeatedly interpret x- and y-values while trying to eliminate an opponent’s hidden points.

Use it for small-group review when students are graphing and reading ordered pairs in the first quadrant. The two possible coordinates from each card pair make students pay close attention to coordinate order.
