So Very Close!

So Very Close! is a Grades 5–6 measurement investigation built around volume displacement and estimation. Students choose objects that can be immersed in water, estimate how many milliliters or cubic centimeters each object will displace, then measure the actual displacement. The difference between estimate and actual value becomes the score, with the lowest total error winning.

Use it in a small group or whole class when students are learning to determine volume by liquid displacement. Comparing estimates with actual measurements creates natural discussion about which object features influenced students’ predictions.
