Square Wars
geometry · area and perimeter of polygons on a grid
To find the area of polygons by composing or decomposing it into squares.
Square Wars is a Grade 6 geometry strategy game where players conquer area on a 10-by-10 grid while staying within a limited perimeter. A die increases the amount of available fencing, and students may expand their territory horizontally or vertically as long as the perimeter of the owned region does not exceed that fencing total. Every move connects area gained with perimeter used.
Use it for small-group practice when students are comparing area and perimeter and decomposing polygons into square units. The game naturally shows that shapes with similar areas can require different amounts of boundary. Create a free Find a Math Game account to generate teacher-ready lesson support for Square Wars.
