Squeeze the Middle

place value · ordering and comparing three-digit numbers

To put numbers in order up to 1000 [2.NBT.A.4].

Squeeze the Middle is a Grade 2 place-value game for ordering and comparing three-digit numbers. Each player uses six cards to build two numbers with as wide a range as possible, then three new cards create a “middle” number. A player scores only when that middle number falls between the two numbers they built.

Use it for small-group practice when students are comparing numbers up to 1,000 and reasoning about intervals. The strategy of maximizing the spread encourages students to think carefully about digit placement before the middle number is revealed.
