Substitution Cross-Off
equations · substituting values, graphing ordered pairs, and analyzing linear relations
Substitute numbers for variables in expressions, and graph and analyze the relation [8.PR(P).2].
Substitution Cross-Off is a Grade 6 functions game that connects substitution, tables, and graphing. On each turn, students choose one die value, substitute it into one of four equations, record the resulting ordered pair, and graph the point in the color assigned to that relation. If the y-value is the next number needed in the student’s 0-to-11 sequence, it can be crossed off.
Use it for partner or small-group practice when students are learning how an equation generates a set of ordered pairs. The four equations let students compare how the same x-value can produce different y-values.
