T-BALL ADDITION
addition · adding two two-digit numbers with or without regrouping; estimating closeness
To add two 2-digit numbers with or without regrouping
T-BALL ADDITION is a Grade 2 card game for adding two two-digit numbers with or without regrouping. Four cards are “pitched” to the center, and players race to arrange them into two two-digit numbers whose sum matches—or comes as close as possible to—one of the four base values on the game board. The arrangement choice makes estimation part of the strategy.
Use it in a small group when students are practicing two-digit addition and judging the size of sums. Ask students to explain why their card arrangement should land closest to a particular base before checking the exact total.
