Tangram Chess
geometry · transformations with tangrams
Create, analyze and describe designs using translations (slides), rotations (turns) and reflections (flips) [7.SS(T).11].
Tangram Chess is a geometry strategy game for Grades 7–8 that uses translations, rotations, and reflections as legal moves. Players start with tangram pieces in a home square and may slide, flip, or rotate one piece each turn, but they must identify the transformation—including the rotation corner or reflection line—before making the move. Pieces cannot overlap or move off the board.
Use it for partner work when students are learning to describe transformations precisely. The race to reconstruct the tangram pieces in the opposite home square gives every transformation a strategic purpose.
