TARGET NUMBER

expressions · basic combinations, target number expressions

TARGET NUMBER is a Grade 1 addition game where students place four drawn digits before knowing what future cards will appear. Once all four spaces are filled, players add their numbers and compare the sum with the target of 20. The closest total wins, so every digit placement becomes a small decision about how the final sum might turn out.

Use it in a small group when students are building addition fluency and benchmark sense around 20. Asking students to estimate their likely total before the last card is placed can make the target reasoning more visible.
