The Mean Game

data · mean, median, and mode

Construct sets of data given measures of central tendency and variability [8.SP(DA).6].

The Mean Game is a Grade 6 data game where each player secretly receives a target mode and then builds a visible set of cards that will satisfy that statistical condition. Players draw and discard in a Rummy-style format, adjusting their data set as they work toward the hidden target. The game turns measures of central tendency into a construction problem.

Use it in a small group when students are learning mean, median, and mode and need experience creating data rather than only analyzing it. Ask students to explain how one card changes the mode or another measure before discarding. Create a free Find a Math Game account to generate teacher-ready lesson support for The Mean Game. No credit card is required, with 3 lifetime lesson generations.
