THE MIDDLE CHILD RULES

place value · ordering two-digit numbers and identifying numbers within a range

To put numbers in order up to 100 [1.NBT.B.3].

THE MIDDLE CHILD RULES is a Grade 1 place-value game for ordering two-digit numbers and judging whether a third number falls within a range. Players use four cards to create two two-digit endpoints with as wide a spread as possible, then two new cards form the “middle” number. A point is earned when the middle number lies between the endpoints.

Use it in a small group when students are comparing and ordering numbers to 100. The strategy of maximizing the range makes digit placement important before the middle number is revealed.
