The Place Value Game

place value · Building greatest and least numbers

The Place Value Game is a Grade 2 partner activity where students place drawn digits onto a place-value mat to build the greatest or least possible number. Each new card must be placed before the next one is drawn, so students must decide which position will help their final number most. The same simple rules can be used for either highest-number or lowest-number rounds.

Use it for partner practice when students are learning how digit position changes value. The irreversible placement decisions naturally prompt discussion about why a high digit belongs in one place and a low digit in another.
