Treasure by Weight

measurement · estimating total weight using unit weight and multiplication

Treasure by Weight is a Grade 3 measurement investigation built around a pirate-treasure scenario. Students measure the weight of one cup of identical “treasure” pieces, determine how many cups are in the full chest, and multiply to estimate the total weight. The activity connects unit rate thinking with measurement in a concrete context.

Use it as a whole-class application task when students are learning to scale one measured quantity to a larger collection. Ask students to explain why multiplying the weight of one cup by the number of cups gives the total.
