What’s the Reciprocal? Part 1

fractions · Matching fractions with reciprocal equivalents

What’s the Reciprocal? Part 1 is a Grade 6 whole-class matching activity for identifying reciprocal fractions. Each student receives one fraction card and moves around the room looking for a partner whose fraction is reciprocal to their own. Equivalent forms can count as matches, so a card such as 4/5 may pair with 5/4, 10/8, or 20/16.

Use it when students are learning that reciprocal pairs multiply to 1 and need to recognize equivalent forms at the same time. After students find a match, have them explain why the pair works and write a related equation.
