ZERO WAR

expressions · creating expressions close to zero

Creating and evaluating numerical expressions using +, −, ×, ÷ and parentheses. Strategic thinking to get as close to zero as possible. Order of operations and mental math fluency.

ZERO WAR is an expression-building card battle for Grades 4–7. Each player reveals four cards and must use all four values exactly once with addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, parentheses, and optional negative signs to create an expression as close to zero as possible. The player with the smaller absolute value wins the round.

Use it for partner work when students are ready for flexible operation choice, order of operations, and strategic mental math. Comparing two different expressions from the same cards creates strong discussion about efficiency and equivalence.
